The Alcazaba

Standard

Thursday 20th April

This morning we wandered and meandered around the narrow streets of the old city of Badajoz. Breakfast toast and coffee in a quirky little street café was followed by a walk to the citadel ~ the alcazaba. Built during the Islamic period, much still remains today. The views over the city, to the many terracotta rooftops and river beyond are terrific.

The Plaza Alta is spectacular, with it’s black, white and red tiled buildings and many arches surrounding the square, it is a great place to soak up the history of the area.

I’m sure you would have been imersed in the magical days of old and the tales of battles and conquering heroes.

Miss you so much

Darling Angel son.

Wednesday 19th April

This afternoon we walked across the River Guadiana using an old pedestrian bridge Puente de Palmas, that was first put in place in the early sixteenth century. We walked through the impressive gates, the entrance to the old city, as approached from Portugal.

It seems to be a popular route for walkers, runners and cyclists. Many ducks, geese and swans were being fed bread and crumbs by a number of children.

You would have liked to walk across this bridge, probably running ahead, looking over the sides, or chasing the ducks.

We miss you sweetie

Beloved Angel son

And so it was, back to work for my son and his girlfriend today ~ they run an academy teaching English to Spanish children. However they don’t start work until four in the afternoon, as it’s too hot in the daytime. When we drove into the city, the car was showing 34°C. Thank goodness for air conditioning.

In the afternoon we walked to their place of work to say hello. I think you would have been proud of your brother my darling. Wish you could have seen his accomplishments. We all miss you poppet.

Darling Angel son.

A quiet birthday

Standard

Monday 17th April

Today was your brother’s thirtieth birthday. Celebrations should have been in order. Unfortunately, following yesterday’s lunch he came down with a very bad case of food poisoning.

Most of the day was spent quietly resting, but early evening we went out for a walk by the river, followed by dinner at an Italian restaurant.

Cumpleaños Feliz, Luke ~ how to embarrass a thirty year old.

You would have liked the meal my darling, and you would have laughed at your brother being embarrassed by everyone in the restaurant applauding.

Sunday 16th April

We left Faro early this morning and drove westwards towards Albufeira. Dipping down a steep and windy road we parked above a spectacular beach called Praia do Carvalho, accessible only by an uneven set of steps, hewn into the rock, inside a tunnel.

We spent a couple of hours here, watching the waves, swimming, and being amazed by the patterns in the cliffs, the caves and passageways that had been carved into the rocks high above the sea.

We drove on to another, much more touristy beach for lunch. Many holidaymakers were wandering, eating ice creams and drinking, listening to disco music, or being transported around in a sightseeing train pulling blue and white carriages.

By late afternoon we were ready to hit the road again, and our son drove us North to his house in Spain, where we will be staying for this coming week.

It was a long day, but the beaches were superb. I’m sure you would have loved exploring the nooks and crannies of the secret tunnels.

We do miss you my darling, as we travel to new destinations, and can only imagine how you would react to the places we go now.

Your brother came too

Saturday 15th April

We spent this morning wandering and shopping, weaving our way round and about the narrow streets of Faro. Stopping for coffee, browsing, window shopping, or having a rest in the shade.

Early afternoon, your brother and his girlfriend arrived. They had been driving around the Algarve for the past few days, stopping at little beaches and coves, hoping for wind, so that they could do some kite surfing. However it has been quite calm, so they were out of luck.

We watched a beautiful sunset this evening over the marina, then found a typical Portuguese restaurant tucked away in the back streets, and sampled tuna, cod, bream and sea bass, finished off with traditional almond and nougat cake. Suitably full, we toddled off back to our hotel.

Wishing you too were here to enjoy time with us.

The thing was, just before we left the hotel this evening, a friend of yours from Junior School posted a photo of you my darling, as part of a group who put on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You were the narrator, and were probably about ten years old.

A sweet memory and a gentle reminder that you are still with us.

Love you poppet.

Boat trip

Standard

Friday 14th April

This morning we took a boat trip to the outer islands surrounding Faro. The weather was glorious, not too hot, but plenty of sunscreen was applied beforehand. Out first stop was Isla Deserta, not really a deserted island, as apparently there is one inhabitant and lots of day trippers, plus a restaurant that has been there for twenty or so years. We had a little explore over the sand and dunes, picked up a few shells and saw a starfish. Lots of bird life make their home on these islands, and we saw terns, egrets, cormorants, oystercatchers and a white spoonbill.

Another short boat ride took us to Farol Island where we stopped for some lunch, and further exploring. The Lighthouse Island.

Upon our return to land, having been recommended by our boat captain, we tried the local firewater ~ Medronho Aguadente ~ seriously strong licor. Much more to our taste is Beirão ~ smooth and wonderfully palatable.

And of course, Frankie Angel Bear came along for the trip. Think you would have enjoyed yourself, and I’m sure the captain would have let you have a go at steering the boat, like another young chap was allowed to do.

Missing you on this holiday my darling.

Better Together

Standard

Thursday 13th April

There was a lot less walking today! Perhaps we over did it yesterday. But anyway, we (slowly) walked around the shops, marina and market. Faro is such a great place to soak up the wonderful atmosphere and people watch.

Love you so much sweetheart.

Wish we could be together again. It certainly is better together…….

What a fabulously sunny, blue-sky day it has been.

We left the hotel about 10:30am, and spent seven hours walking around the marina, old town and cathedral. Shaded, cobbled streets were full of interesting shops, restaurants, cafes and bars.

And then back again this evening to watch the sun set, see the sky turn pink and just generally chill out, sit back and people watch.

And of course Frankie Angel Bear came too.
Love you sweetheart
